Europe’s First Underwater Museum

Selecting where to go on vacation can sometimes be morechallenging then identifying cheap travel options such as cheap airplane tickets, and cheap vacation packages.

After two years in the making, Europes first underwatermuseum is complete. Located deep in thewaters off the Spanish island of Lanzarote, this museum is accessible only to snorkelers,divers, and sea life.

The Museo Atlantico (Atlantic Museum) is home to over 300sculptures by international artist Jason DeCaires Taylor. His project was inspired by the defense ofthe ocean. His work was made fromenvironmentally friendly concrete, and portrays scenes from everyday life. The goal was to raise awareness of oceanicissues.

Real life models were used to make casts for hissculptures. One of the sculpturesinvolves 35 walking figures and is called the Rubicon. A sculpture called Content features afaceless couple taking a selfie.

DeCaires Taylor has supplied similar sculptureinstallations at underwater museums in the Bahamas, Mexico, and theAntilles. This artist has a total of 65sculptures in Moilinere Bay in Grenada.

Submerged at depths between 39 to 50 on the seafloor ofLas Coloradas bay, the mysterious human figures help form part of an artificialreef, acting as a breeding site for local species.
