Europe’s Bad News is Good for U.S. Tourists

Rioting in Greece and the ominous debt crisis in several European nations may well result in additional cheap airplane tickets and cheap discount hotel rooms being offered this year. The euro has fallen almost 17 percent against the dollar in the last six months, making European travel more affordable for those spending U.S. dollars.

The euro hit a 12 month low against the dollar of $1.26 on May 13th.

Now is an ideal time to make hotel reservations, purchase plane tickets and find great shopping bargains because of the weakened euro. Potential American travelers to Europe are being advised to purchase tickets no later than mid June since that is typically when ticket prices tend to increase.

Cheap airplane tickets to Ireland and Portugal are currently great deals, being offered at below average prices.

Prices are dropping in Greece in particular and Greek destination stops are competing aggressively to attract travelers, especially to islands that appeal to tourists, such as Crete, Dodecanese, Mykonos, and Rhodes.

Hotels in Greece are currently tending to add value rather than drop their rates. Some hotels are offering a fourth night free, when guests pay for three nights, while other hotels are offering complimentary dinners or transfers. Experts forecast that Greek hotels will eventually start reducing their prices or offer even more freebies.

Many Europeans are upset that the Greeks forced the European Union to financially back their bailout needs and this in turn is expected to reduce travel to Greece from other European nations this year.
