A trip that was planned carefully with the purchase of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms can turn into a nightmare if a wallet or purse is lost or even worse, stolen.
The following are the steps you should take when faced with such an event:
Create a list of what you have lost and prioritize what needs to be dealt with.
Immediately contact all credit card companies and banks cancelling your credit and debit cards. Request replacement cards.
If your property was stolen, report the theft to the police so that there is a record on file.
If you lost your drivers license, contact your states Department of Motor Vehicles and request a new license.
Contact the fraud departments of the three major credit reporting companies (Equifax: 800-525-6285, Experian: 888-397-3742, TransUnion: 800-680-7289) requesting they place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. You should also ask that they contact you before authorizing any new lines of credit in your name.
If your Social Security card was lost, request a replacement. Going forward it is usually smart not to carry this card in your wallet.
Request a replace insurance card. If your Medicare card was lost, contact the Social Security Administration for a replacement.
If you lost any club membership, video rental or bonus club cards, contact each company separately.
Losing your wallet is a hassle, but almost any enduring problems can be overcome if you are prompt in notifying the appropriate people/companies about your loss. www.cheapfares.com
