Conflicting Responsibilities of Flight Attendants

Passengers love finding cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages. That love often does not extend to how they treat flight attendants. Flight attendants wear multiple hats including those of a smiling bartender and a serious rules enforcer.

Flight attendants are earning less than they used to, working longer, harder hours in a higher stressed environment. They also have to deal with passengers, some of whom take the old adage the the customer is always right to the extreme.

At times it can be very challenging to be helpful to certain passengers and then police the same people.

There is more involved in being a flight attendant than meets the eye. Flight attendants are expected to be proactive and often are making assessments such as the following during flights:

Which passengers are likely to need help in an emergency?

Who is acting or looks suspicious?

Do any passengers appear ill? If yes, are they well enough to fly?

Is the person sitting next to an unaccompanied minor OK with the child and vice versa?

Flight attendants often have to deal with a lack of respect expressed by troublesome passengers. Frequent fliers tend to be the ones most likely to refuse to follow safety rules such as cell phone use or listening to safety briefings.

Few passengers probably know that it is a federal crime, punishable by up to a $25,000 fine, to disobey or interfere with flight attendants.
