Bus Transporting People in Luggage Compartment

Many travelers appreciate cheap travel options, including cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages. However, there usually is a limit as to what travel providers are willing to do in order to offer cheap fares.

On May 27th an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer found six passengers being transported in the luggage compartment of a bus in Ohio during an inspection of a bus traveling from Roscommon, Michigan to Clyde, Ohio.

The driver explained to the officer that the passengers were traveling with the luggage because there was no more room on the bus. Mattresses, pillows and loose luggage were also in the cargo area of the bus.

The companys operations constituted an imminent hazard according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The company has been ordered to cease operations and take its coaches out of service. The operator was Roger Haines and Haines Tours of Gladwin.

Haines was cited last year when Transportation officials discovered that a bus luggage storage area was used as an unauthorized sleeping berth for drivers.

There have been a recent series of deadly tour bus accidents. A few weeks ago, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ordered Sky Express Inc. of Charlotte, N.C., to close down after an accident in Virginia which killed four passengers and injured dozens. A few days later, the government had to order the same company to shut down again after investigators found that the company was repainting its buses and continuing to sell tickets under the names of 108 Tours and 108 Bus. www.cheapfares.com
