Some travelers delighted by their purchase of cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages are less than happy to have to touch germ laden hotel TV remotes.
Now there is a free mobile app that empowers hotel guests to use their own smartphones or tablets to control their hotel TVs. Germ adverse travelers will no longer have to clean remote controls as soon as they check into their rooms or cover them with plastic.
The app is being provided by LodgeNet Interactive Corporation which provides on demand and other TV based services in over 1.7 million hotel rooms in North America.
The app, which was released on February 6th, can be downloaded online prior to check-in, at check-in in a hotel lobby, or in room via an on screen QR code. Each guest is provided a unique code to enter into the app which then syncs the TV with the guests personal device.
The app enables the user to display TV schedules customized to the channels available at that hotel as well as access information about the hotel the guest is staying at as well as information regarding nearby restaurants and attractions. Users are able to click to dial the front desk to request a wakeup call, ask questions, order room service, or handle other business.
This app currently works in over 2,000 LodgeNet serviced hotels and in over 550,000 rooms. The app is supposed to function in over one million rooms by the end of 2012.
There are iPhone and Android versions of this app.
