American Will Test Video Streaming on Flights

Travelers focus used to be almost solely on finding cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms. Now more and more travelers are looking to be entertained while they fly. To address that growing demand, American Airlines will begin testing a program that allows its passengers to stream content to their electronic personal devices while in the air.

American will be using the same company (Aircell) that provides Wi-Fi service on American flights. The test will allow passengers the opportunity to view a variety of different movies and TV shows while flying.

The in-flight streaming service will be tested on two American planes this summer. American has announced its intention to roll out Wi-Fi service to its entire fleet by the end of 2012. If the video streaming test is successfully, it too could be made available on all American flights during the same time frame. This service is made feasible by placing a server on the plane, which would store the media.

Wi-Fi enabled devices, including iPads, iPods, smartphones and laptops will be able to take advantage of this service. The streaming service will be priced similarly to pay per view services.

Offering a voluntary service that provides value to many passengers is expected to be positively received so long as it is properly priced. www.cheapfares.com
