Faced with disgruntled passengers unhappy about recent flight delays and cancellations American Airlines decided that it needed to do something more than simply continue to offer cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages. It has come out with double mile promotions as a way of apologizing.
In a recent message to its customers American Airlines acknowledged that its recent operating performance was not up to its standards and it is deeply sorry.
Almost 1,400 American flights were cancelled in September. Only 59 percent of its flights arrived on time that month vs. an on time record of 85 percent or better from Delta, Southwest and US Airways. American accused some of its pilots of conducting an illegal work slowdown in response to pilot pay and benefit cuts that were imposed in early September.
American is offering the following to try to retain its frequent fliers:
Elite members of its frequent flier program (which starts at 25,000 miles a year) will be awarded double miles through the end of the year.
Non-elite frequent fliers will earn double miles from November 16th through November 26th.
All frequent fliers will earn double credit towards elite status on flights through December 31st.
These offers includes all flights on American Airlines planes as well as regional affiliates American Eagle and American Connections but not flights operated by code sharing partner airlines.
